First July mass killings trial process begins

Dhaka: Charges have been framed in a case involving mass murder during the July uprising in the Chankharpul area of the capital.

Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam filed the charges with the International Crimes Tribunal on Sunday.

This is the first case to reach the stage of formal charges since the tribunal was restructured following the July uprising.

If accepted, it will mark the beginning of the tribunal’s first official trial related to the events of July.

Prosecutor Gazi Monowar Hossain Tamim told reporters that the chief prosecutor submitted the formal charges after reviewing the investigation report and relevant documents provided by the tribunal’s investigation agency. A hearing on the matter is scheduled for today.

The investigation agency submitted its report on April 21 to the Chief Prosecutor’s Office, naming eight individuals — including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman — in connection with the Chankharpul incident. Based on that report, the prosecution submitted the formal charges.

The eight accused are: Former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman, former joint commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, former additional deputy commissioner of Ramna Division Shah Alam Md Akhtarul Islam, former assistant commissioner of Ramna Division Mohammad Imrul, former Shahbagh police station officer-in-charge Md Arshad Hossain, Constable Md Sujan Hossain, Imaz Hossain, and Md Nasirul Islam.

Of them, the last four are currently in jail and were produced before the tribunal on Sunday.

The remaining four are on the run.
