DU student Shammo murder: Three placed on 6-day remand

Dhaka: A Dhaka court has granted six-day police remand for three accused in the murder case of SM Shahriar Alam Shammo, a student leader of the BNP’s student wing Chhatra Dal at the University of Dhaka.

The order was issued on Saturday by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza following a remand hearing.

The three accused placed on remand are: Md Tamim Hawlader, 30, son of Ershad Hawlader from Madaripur Sadar; Palash Sardar, 30, son of Kalam Sardar; and Samrat Mallik, 28, son of Jatindranath Mallik of Dasar police station.

The accused were produced before the court from jail, and Shahbagh police station Sub-Inspector Taufiq Hasan, the investigation officer of the case, sought a 10-day remand for each.

After hearing, the court granted six days of remand. No defence lawyer was present during the proceedings.

The trio had been arrested on Wednesday morning around 9:30am from the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of the capital. They were sent to jail the following day.

According to the case statement, on the night of May 13 at around 11:45pm, Shammo was returning from Suhrawardy Udyan to the university campus by motorcycle with his friends Ashraful Alam Rafi and Md Abdullah Al Bayezid.

Near the old fountain on the northern side of the Ramna Kali Temple, 10 to 12 unidentified men rammed their motorcycles into Shammo’s vehicle, knocking it down.

When Shammo and his friends asked why they had been hit, the attackers began beating them with bricks, fists, and kicks, causing severe injuries to their heads and bodies.

One of the attackers stabbed Shammo repeatedly in the back of his right thigh with a sharp weapon, while Bayezid was similarly attacked on his right wrist.

Shammo collapsed on the ground, bleeding heavily. Locals rushed to the scene, prompting the attackers to flee after issuing threats. Shammo was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

His elder brother, Shariful Islam, later filed a murder case at Shahbagh police station.
